[Bucky'd been a beat cop for ten years before he was promoted to detective. First day on the job and Stark Tech rolled out new equipment for the force - the kind that in his opinion was completely unnecessary and could with a five second scan, tell the cop using the gun what race the person was. Yeah, they'd been having problems with people disguising themselves to commit crimes but this was overkill. Now there were innocent people being singled out for having a drop of blood from another race in their system. First goddman day with his dream job and Rumlow from homicide makes a joke, scans Bucky and that was that.
One fourth Orc, from his Pa's side. Somehow, he didn't look it. Was built like an orc. All muscle and strength, that he did a damn fine job of hiding. He was demoted for lying on his resume ten years ago. And the thing was, he hadn't lied back then. He hadn't known. His Pa was never around and when he did show up, Bucky'd already been a cop. Hadn't thought there was any point in revealing that new information and he regretted not doing something about it sooner. He was a good cop. A great cop but the force didn't need the attention so he was kicked out. By the time he'd stopped wallowing in self pity, that Stark Tech was available in every home and business. Laws had changed to make it legal. The only way to take a job was to find someone who didn't care or didn't care, and neither were exactly good prospects.
A fella on the force, a friend, put him in touch with a family in Elf District that wanted someone of his particular background. The strength of an orc but looked human. His background was what got him the job. Bodyguard. To some elf celebrity who belonged to an ancient Elf family; code for old, rich and don't fuck with. He'd seen the guy on the billboards and tv. Bucky didn't have an issue with elves or dwarves or centaurs or whatever, but it wasn't the job he wanted and he didn't have any choice but to take it.
That was two years ago, today. And, even if he wouldn't admit it, Bucky fucking loved his job. That elf had a large part in why he enjoyed it so much, but that was something that wasn't going to happen. He'd have to pine quietly, for god knows how long, and pretend he was fine while doing it.]
Wake up. [Bucky shoves his booted shoe under the elf's side and flips his body with one strong push.] It's two in the goddamn afternoon. You're gonna be late.
[Again. For his own birthday party. He knew the elf had to get ready. Bucky didn't want to hear it from the elf's mother if he didn't show up close to when he was supposed to. The only reason he was as aggressive now as he was - well, the elf would see when he opened his eyes and looked two feet to Bucky's left, a foot behind him. Yeah, pal, that's your Dad. Your pissed off Elf Dad who paid Bucky to keep you safe. Get up and tell you'll be on time.]
